Baby steps

Dan and I were talking the other day about how so many people are asking us: “Why?”

They simply don’t understand why we’d want to add a second park. Isn’t Holiday World enough?

The question reminded me of the discussion that most of us, as parents, have when talking about adding to the nest.

Why, after all, have a second child? That first child is absolutely perfect, fills your heart, takes up every waking hour (and some half-awake hours, too) …

The parallels are certainly there. We’ve enjoyed growing this park so much, it’s certainly tempting to add a second. A second park could be “brought up” the same way (that being: safe, clean, friendly, value-oriented) as the first, yet encouraged to have its own personality. Each park would have its own set of rides and attractions (no cookie-cutter plans for us!).

A second park would not be short-changed – it would receive the same TLC as the older sibling. The four members of the Koch/Kamp families who formed Bluegrass Boardwalk, Inc., have the dedication to make it work and the creativity to make it interesting. And fun.

So … any reasons why not?

Ah, that last nagging question. Can we afford a second “child”?

In the announcement of the lease being approved by the State Fair Board, this detail didn’t always get included in the discussion: there are a few more steps to take. As we move ahead in these next few weeks, the focus is on securing financing and applying for economic-development incentives through the Kentucky Tourism Cabinet. (These steps couldn’t be taken until we had a lease in hand.)

Thanks to all for your encouragement and enthusiasm. The “Welcome to Louisville” messages have meant the world to us. We’ll keep you posted!

We have a lease!

What a day!

The next step of our quest to open Bluegrass Boardwalk in Louisville was reached today with the unanimous in-favor vote by the Kentucky State Fair Board.

Following the vote, the Bluegrass Boardwalk partners (along with Pat Koch, whom Dan refers to as “the General” … hmmm, since we’re in Kentucky, should she be “the Colonel”?) stepped outside of Freedom Hall to answer questions from the news media.

Lease Day: February 23, 2012

Here’s the news release they received:

Lease Approval moves Bluegrass Boardwalk closer to re-opening Louisville park in 2013
800 seasonal and 25 full-time jobs projected

Louisville, Kentucky (23 February, 2012) — This afternoon’s unanimous vote by the Kentucky State Fair Board to approve a lease with Bluegrass Boardwalk, Inc. moves the reopening of the 57-acre amusement and water park closer to reality.

“We can’t wait to get started!” says Bluegrass Boardwalk’s Dan Koch*. “We’ve got a lot of work to do to get the park reopened in just 15 months, but we’ll get it done. We’d like to thank the Fair Board for putting their faith in us and the community at large for their tremendous cheers of support.”

Following today’s lease approval, Bluegrass Boardwalk’s next steps are to secure financing and continue the application process for economic development incentives from Kentucky’s Tourism Cabinet. Bluegrass Boardwalk will not request public monies from the Kentucky Legislature.

Bluegrass Boardwalk’s plans are to invest $15-$20 million to reopen the park in May of 2013, with continued investment in future years.

“We’re bringing our business model of exceptional safety, cleanliness, friendliness and value for families,” says Natalie Koch. “That means free soft drinks, free sunscreen and free use of inner tubes.”

Bluegrass Boardwalk, Inc. is a partnership of four members of the Koch family in Santa Claus, Indiana: Holiday World president Dan Koch, his sister Natalie Koch, their cousin Kathy Kamp, and her husband, Michael Kamp, who is a General Manager at Holiday World. Dan, Natalie and Kathy are grandchildren of Holiday World’s founder, Louis J. Koch, who opened the park (originally called Santa Claus Land) in 1946.

Time for some questions – and answers

If you’ve been following the news (and our Facebook page), you know that a big step may take place in Louisville on Thursday afternoon.

Thursday marks the monthly meeting of the Kentucky State Fair Board. And the last item on their agenda is a vote on the proposed lease between the Fair Board and Bluegrass Boardwalk, Inc. If the lease is approved, we’re one step closer.

Following the meeting, our Dan Koch is going to have a chat with reporters.

If you were a reporter, what would you ask Dan? He might not have an answer just yet, but we’ll keep a list and, assuming we move forward toward re-opening Louisville’s park in 2013, we’ll provide more information as decisions are made.

Excited? So are we! Please head over to our Facebook page to share your opinions, ideas, and questions.

Welcome to Bluegrass Boardwalk!

Although we’re not yet at the point to be able to make any announcements, we did want to share with everyone that our fact-finding is going well. Here’s an update:

Members of the Koch family in Santa Claus, Indiana, continue to explore re-opening Louisville’s amusement and water park in 2013. Four family members have formed a new company – Bluegrass Boardwalk, Incorporated – to negotiate a lease agreement with the Kentucky State Fair Board, secure financing, and apply for economic development incentives from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. No public monies will be requested from the Kentucky Legislature by Bluegrass Boardwalk, Incorporated.

The members of the Koch family involved in discussions with the Kentucky State Fair Board as Bluegrass Boardwalk, Incorporated are Holiday World president Dan Koch, his sister Natalie Koch, their cousin Kathy Kamp, and her husband, Michael Kamp, who is a General Manager at Holiday World. Dan, Natalie and Kathy are grandchildren of Holiday World’s founder, Louis J. Koch, who opened the park (originally called Santa Claus Land) in 1946.
